A Dark Tale Of Dublin In The Nineteen Fifties

Christine Falls - Benjamin Black

John Banville writing as Benjamin Black summons up Dublin in the nineteen fifties, a city of smoke-filled bars and cobbled streets held firmly in the grip of a Catholic church so concerned with its own power that it has lost sight of right and wrong.

This is a terrific piece of writing with all the John Banville trademarks: extraordinary control of language, keen observation of detail, masterful evocation of mood and perfect timing. Banville's default mood of romantic cynicism suits this foray into crime writing so well that he might have been doing it for years.
